Shadow Work Circles: Mining the Unconscious

Shadow work involves addressing the aspects of our persona that seem incongruent, misaligned, or shameful. These hidden parts and belief systems lie deep in the unconscious, manifesting as behaviors and thoughts we struggle to hide from ourselves and others. The shadow includes the less admirable parts of our personality that we ignore, yet they affect our personal and intimate relationships.

The key to change is facing these parts with curiosity, courage, and acceptance. In a group setting, where we witness and are witnessed by others, we realize our shadows are not so different from everyone else’s. This experience is often profound and liberating. We all long to belong and be loved.

Our shadow work space creates a safe environment with strong agreements like confidentiality, ensuring individuals feel secure sharing their vulnerabilities. The group forms a circle, and facilitators prompt us to reveal hidden parts of ourselves.

Those ready can engage in shadow work processes, which may include:

  • Psychodrama: Acting out scenes, often involving family members.
  • Anger or Grief Work: Expressing emotions through hitting pillows or sharing tears and sorrows.
  • Accessing Joy: Involving the group in songs or games.
  • Presencing Processes or Bioenergetic Work: Other methods like trust falls and restraint work.
